  1. The Playful Street /// Streets are serious spaces, made of hard and harsh materials. Since the proliferation of the automobile, streets have become a space to pass through, rather than places to be in and enjoy. What if having fun on a street was as important as efficiently moving cars, bicycles, and pedestrians through it? How might play, which is usually relegated to backyards, parks, and playgrounds, be integrated into the streetscape? What can be learned from existing forms of play that can be reimagined in the context of a streetscape? How might streets and sidewalks engage people of all ages in play? What happens when streets become playful? Participants are asked to focus on designs that do not simply remove cars from the street to make room for play. Submissions may be conceptual, technical, and/or artistic. An entry must fit within single 4 inch diameter circle with white beyond. See website for details.

  3. The Harvard Graduate School of Design is pleased to announce the third edition of the Wheelwright Prize, a $100,000 travel-based research grant awarded annually to early-career architects who have demonstrated exceptional design talent, produced work of scholarly and professional merit, and who show promise for continued creative work.

By opening the prize to applicants from all over the world, Harvard GSD hopes encourage new forms of research informed by cross-cultural engagement. We seek individual applicants (no teams or firms) who are accomplished but emerging, who are resourceful and risk-taking, and who can make the most of this extraordinary opportunity—to have the time, peace of mind, and resources to construct a research project that will have an impact on his or her own practice, and potentially on the discipline of architecture as a whole. Applicants must have received a degree from a professionally accredited architecture program in the past 15 years (those who have graduated prior to 2000 are ineligible). Deadline: January 30, 2015. A winner will be announced in April 2015.

  5. Design Exchange, Canada’s Design Museum, is pleased to announce the fourth year of the CONNECT: EnAbling Change Post-Secondary Design Competition. This competition invites college and university students from across the province to submit projects exploring design concepts that are accessible to everyone, and help remove barriers for people with disabilities.

Students are invited to submit projects that illustrate the idea of design for all: In that the design of products and environments is usable by all people to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation.

The competition is open to all Ontario post-secondary students studying in all design fields.

For its fourth year, the competition emphasizes accessibility in design for web and digital platforms. Ontario’s accessibility laws require some organizations to take steps to make newly developed websites more accessible to people with disabilities. These requirements will create increased demand for designers with a thorough understanding of accessibility. Students studying interactive and web design are strongly encouraged to enter. All submitted projects must have been completed during the student’s period of study in an Ontario undergraduate or graduate design program. Individual and group projects are eligible and may be completed independently or as coursework.

  7. The perFORM 2015 Building Design Competition challenges emerging architectural professionals to fuse high performance building with high design.

WHAT: This year’s competition calls for architectural students and interns to design a net zero energy, mixed-use, multifamily building in the heart of Portland, Oregon. Group and individual entries will be judged based on the criteria of resourcefulness, replicability, and beauty. Adaptability (future proofing) and the project’s triple bottom line will also be considered. The perFORM jury will distribute $6,000 in cash awards, and award winners will receive publication online and in print, as well as public display of their boards in Portland and Seattle.

WHY: Demonstrate that high performance building and high design are inherently complementary and that by fusing the two we can create buildings of unsurpassed beauty and efficiency. Show that net zero energy use is practical for larger, multistory buildings. Support emerging architects in their development as designers of high performance buildings.

WHO: Architectural students (at NAAB or CACB accredited schools) and architectural interns based in the US and Canada. Both group and individual entries are welcome and will be judged by a jury consisting of practicing architects, design educators, and builders. Professor Peter Keyes of the University of Oregon Department of Architecture will be serving as the perFORM 2015 advisor.

WHERE: The design site is a new parcel in Portland, Oregon created by the removal of a portion of NE Sandy Boulevard as part of the coupling of E Burnside Street and NE Couch Street. The site, bounded by NE Couch on the north, E Burnside on the south, and 14th Avenue on the east, provides the opportunity to make a strong visual statement, especially from the Northeast along the Sandy Boulevard corridor. Zoning is EXdj with a maximum floor to area ratio of 4 to 1.

WHEN: Registration (free) is open now. Guidelines are now available and competition resources (energy verification tool, pro forma, board templates, etc.) will be available soon. Entry submissions are due on June 19, 2015 at 11:59pm (Pacific).

  10. The High Line didn’t appear out of thin air, but thin air played a role in its development. For decades, the High Line had been seen as an ugly obstacle to neighborhood redevelopment. Comprehensive rezoning of the area and provisions to allow the transfer of development rights turned the structure into an asset. During the construction of the High Line the whole district of Chelsea has undergone a major transformation. Many buildings have been rehabilitated and many are under construction. Hence the idea of this contest, converting a space that is now a parking lot, near the elevated square formed by the High Line’s crossing of 10th avenue and 17th street, in a building that represents the new relationship between people and nature. The competition involves the design of a vertical farm with a residential use in NY and the related reorganization of the environment.

  11. The Chicago Architectural Club (CAC) announces the 2014 Chicago Prize Competition on The Barack Obama Presidential Library. In partnership with the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) a call for entries for the Chicago Prize Competition is taking place as of November 15th, 2015 with the announcement of the winning entries on February 3rd, 2015. The recent media coverage surrounding the announced Barack Obama Presidential Library, drawing bids from contenders New York, Honolulu, and Chicago, once again initiates the desire for speculations and projections. As the fourteenth of its kind, this civic institution will not only function to house a collection of artifacts and documents relating to the president’s life but will also provide an educational infrastructure and framework for outreach and community programs.

This year’s Chicago Prize is calling for speculative proposals for the Barack Obama Presidential Library to initiate a debate in order to rethink and redefine this particular building typology. Entry information, including a complete set of rules, can be found at www.chicagoarchitecturalclub.org.

  12. INTRODUCTION
Dakar is the capital and largest city in Senegal. It is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the western most city on the African mainland. Cinematography is the art or science of motion picture photography. It is the technique of film photography, including both the shooting and development of the film. Cinema: A film theatre (also refered to as movie house, film house, movie theater or picture house) is a venue, usually a building or desiginated space for viewing films for entertainment. Senegal has a number of filmmakers such as Ousmane Sembene who wrote and narrated the film “Borom Sarret” in 1963. The film received wide recognition in Africa and internationally. Today, downtown Dakar, a city of 2.5 million people, has almost no films theatres with many of the old theatre if not all closing their doors in the last decade.
