  3. A city is constantly changing, and this is also the case for Sittard. For instance, the historic city centre once drew in large numbers of tourists, but the number of visitors these days has dropped considerably, and continues to fall. The number of vacant commercial premises is increasing, resulting in a negative impact on the look and feel of the centre. Another change is the intensification of the roads and the traffic using them. A main route through the centre (The Rijksweg) results in a division of the former shopping area. The high intensity of car traffic means the road acts as a barrier, despite the fact that there is a ring road around the centre. Current deve…

  11. What does it mean to build? Traditionally, building has been defined as the assembly of parts or materials toward the creation of a whole. While to build is often perceived as an Apollonian pursuit, to destroy appears to be its Dionysian counterpart. Understanding that our built environment is the product of many forces, it can dialectically be reduced to the tensions between creation and destruction, addition and subtraction, and erection and demolition. In a design culture focused on the superlative (the tallest, the newest, the priciest), in which destruction is often perceived of or produced by an act of violence, the processes of removal appear as secondary concerns …

  13. We all are running at a reckless speed in our lives as a whole. From Low speed to 4G, from cart to supersonic jets, from a lifetime of learning principles to learn in 24 hours’ tips, the speed seems to be the only motto in our lives, whether right or wrong. Thus, understandably we spend a lot of time in travelling, especially with the city full of traffic and boring waits at signals. The competition invites ideas from the young mind to create a traffic island for the perplexed and confused citizen which may offer the symbolic representation of the speed itself or aim to create a contrasting solemnity we all may actually need. Options are open to 2 (max) members’ UG or D…

  23. The University Of Detroit Mercy School Of Architecture is conducting a call for entries for the 22nd edition of Dichotomy. The theme of Dichotomy 22 is Creep. Creep denotes stealth, slow contortment, an underlying feeling of unease. Creep is solid materials deforming, boundaries slinking toward each other, something inching slowly closer without notice. Creep causes us discomfort while simultaneously suggesting something darkly different, something not altogether bad, but frightening in its furtiveness. Dichotomy 22 aims to explore this dark underside of the urban, the lurking possibility of architecture, the slow inevitable crawl of progress. Dichotomy, a student pub…
