Five years ago this week we published images of the six finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2007, including the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio. A monumental building for Dubai Opera in the United Arab Emirates by Jean Nouvel was described by readers as “vulgar” and “ugly” and we created an interactive map of major architectural projects in the Gulf states. Images of a structure by Arne Quinze for the Burning Man festival made from 150km of wooden laths attracted plenty of attention and Zaha Hadid designed an exhibition centre with two adjoining residential towers in Moscow. Meanwhile we continued to round up projects from the Mila…

One year ago a proposal for 47 lodges carved into the side of a sandstone cliff in Jordan sparked a furious debate about the project’s “ecological” credentials and London designer Dominic Wilcox created a provocative stylus for using a touch-screen phone in the bath. Architecture projects completed this time last year included David Chipperfield’s Turner Contemporary gallery on the seafront of Margate in England, and a shopping centre on the site of a traditional marketplace in Abu Dhabi by Foster + Partners. Meanwhile, a mobile art pavilion by Zaha Hadid was a hit with readers, while the design for a Comic and Animation Museum in China by Dutch studio MVRDV was compare…

This week the Olympic torch by BarberOsbery won the top prize at the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year awards, a decision that divided Dezeen readers and provoked some design critics to question the validity of the awards. A restoration of historic ship the Cutty Sark in London by Grimhaw architects also proved controversial, with one reader describing it as “stunning”, while another said: “They have skewered the ship like a kebab. Thoroughly disrespectful.” See reaction from architecture critics to this project here. In other architecture news, OMA presented designs for a Moscow gallery to be housed in a converted 1960s restaurant, New York architect Steven Holl reve…
