  1. CALLING: artists, makers, visual thinkers, students and practitioners of design, urbanism, architecture, landscape, planning and other allied disciplines. Images and techniques that portray the process of revealing design in all its forms are invited for a peer-reviewed exhibition and publication. Think Fast explores the role of ambiguity and deconstruction in design imagination, intent and contemporary representation. The interdisciplinary collection of work selected for exhibition will travel to at least three academic venues: Ball State University, Kansas State University and Parsons The New School for Design. The exhibition and subsequent publication will collect unfinished, deconstructed or otherwise ambiguous design images and products to bridge creative disciplines, and to reveal meaning in the often-accidental discoveries that grow out of fast, gestural, conceptual visual thinking. The rough, imperfect sketch or study model does not simply hint at an idea, it inspires the maker and viewer alike to take imagined artistic liberties—connecting a scarcely deliberate concatenation of dots—and filling in the voids with their own creative visions. 8. It gives us immense pleasure to invite you to participate in the Student’s Design Competition 2014. A platform for student’s to showcase their understanding of design and its implementation. "Student’s Design Competition 2014" has been conceptualized and organized by fensterbau frontale India. Through this competition, we wish to encourage students pursuing graduation or post-graduation to put forward their views on sustainability and retrofitting by the means of the competition. Competition Brief: Buildings are the amongst the largest energy consumers of the world. In India, we have a great legacy of following sustainable building traditions, intrinsic to the architecture. However, by blindly adopting global standards of fenestration, we are losing a remarkable opportunity to carry on the tradition. As we know, the most sustainable building is always the one that has already been built. Rather than destroy and recreate infrastructure, it makes more sense to make use of the embodied energy in buildings. By respecting that fundamental precept, we come to the conclusion that is far more sustainable to retrofit existing public buildings for better efficiency rather than make new buildings. Choose an iconic building in your city or the nearest metropolitan area. It must have been constructed before 1990 and must be at least 6 stories tall. Privately owned buildings are allowed, but public use buildings are preferred. The goal is to achieve at least 50% reduction in the energy consumed by the building by retrofitting the façade for better efficiency. Within this is the chance to give an existing cultural and city icon a new lease of life. Register by: 02-10-2015 / Submit by: 02-10-2015 View the full article

  14. Innovative Minds design competition is an exploration into the relationship between a site specific physical architectural design and the virtual world. Investigate the influence of the virtual world blending with physical architecture. The virtual world is built on the framework of computers, the internet, mobile technology and other mediums, which enhance how information is exchanged and how we perceive our surroundings. This framework changes the way we interact with the built world. How interconnected can virtual and physical worlds become and how does this relationship influence physical architecture and its context? Virtual designs continue to evolve through the use of environmental analysis, computational design, building information modeling and rendered imagery. Investigate the link between virtual and physical architecture and how it could address issues such as user interaction, building function, construction techniques, big data and environmental contextualism. With inherent design challenges in every physical site, how can the virtual link assist in solving these issues? How does this process help solve some of the increasingly complex issues in our world today? How are the users of the design and site influenced by this concept? 18. Shelter is pleased to invite architects, planners, students, engineers, designers, thinkers, NGOs and organizations from all over the world to take part in the first annual Dencity Competition. Rapid world growth and urbanization is not allowing cities to adapt and provide for their inhabitants. Towns are quickly growing into cities, and some of the densest places in the world are comprised of makeshift homes, otherwise referred to as slums. Furthermore, already overcrowded cities have to absorb people leaving their rural hometown in hope of job opportunities. There are currently over 1 billion slum dwellers in the world. This number is expected to reach 2 billion by the year 2030. Now, more than ever, we need to play a central role in the development of substandard neighborhoods. Slums affect much more than just housing; they affect almost all living conditions and communities as a whole. The intent of this competition is twofold: to foster new ideas on how to better handle the growing density of unplanned cities and to spread awareness of this massive problem. Contestants should consider how design can empower communities and allow for a self-sufficient future. There are no restrictions in regards to site, program, or size. Projects can be based on a specific location or a general concept. The object is to limit constraints and give participants the freedom to think in the most creative way possible. Submissions do not need to be created exclusively for this competition, but should not have been submitted elsewhere. For more information and to register please visit: https://shelterglobal.org/competition Register by: 04-20-2015 / Submit by: 04-20-2015 View the full article

  20. Call for Entries Young architects and designers are invited to submit work to the annual Architectural League Prize Competition. Projects of all types, either theoretical or real, and executed in any medium, are welcome. Established in 1981 to recognize visionary work by young practitioners, the Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, lecture series, and exhibition organized by The Architectural League and its Young Architects + Designers Committee. Theme: Authenticity Historically, authenticity was contingent on the value of originality, intimating the significance of an origin. Before advancements in technical reproduction challenged this stability, an original was easy to distinguish. For the Greeks, copying took only two forms: stamping and casting – everything else was considered an original. Today, this is no longer a stable dichotomy, and the contingency is decoupling. Sampling, appropriating, hacking, and copying are among our contemporary modes of creative production. Like photography, digital platforms present us with devices, tools, and methods in which copies can be made indistinguishable from originals. Further, parametric and generative design strategies have offered alternative design methods whose very nature challenge the notion of origin and copy through the investigation of the interrelationships of parts to their wholes, and emergent self-organized pattern systems at multiple scales and applications. Consequently, we are presented with an infinite number of variegated parts or objects that are of a continuous series. Similarly, disciplinary boundaries continue to be transformed in the presence of inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborative processes, where authorship can be viewed as horizontal and pluralistic. Recent advances in computation, visualization, material intelligence, and fabrication technologies have begun to alter fundamentally our theoretical understanding of general design principles as well as the architect’s role and practical approach towards architecture and research. In light of these realities we seek proposals that cultivate new positions of authenticity within architecture. The path to obtaining an original voice involves authenticating these positions. We want to see authenticity as a pursuit rather than a form of validation or an essential quality. We are interested in how design, technology, and practice challenge authenticity and the ways that originality, expression, and authorship continue to be pursued. How do we situate these new conceptual frameworks? Thus, submissions might re-examine authenticity through form, design, substance, function, context, or any other means that continue to direct and transform your practice.
