  1. Collegiate institutions can start planning for the U.S. Department of Energy Race to Zero Student Design Competition (Race to Zero), which is at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, April 21–22, 2018. The Race to Zero is an annual competition, open to students and faculty from any interested collegiate institution. The competition challenges collegiate teams to design zero energy ready buildings that are so high performance and energy efficient that all or most annual energy consumption can be offset with renewable energy. Through this competition, future architects, engineers, construction managers, and entrepreneurs gain the skills and experience to start careers in clean energy and generate creative solutions to real-world problems. See the new 2018 competition guide, team application website, and the 2017 competition results . Key upcoming dates for the next competition: • November 2017 – All participating teams must complete the team application and are encouraged to submit a 3-page Project Introduction. • September 2017 to March 2018 – Webinars and building science training are offered. • April 2018 – Finalist teams complete their project submittals and compete with presentations to industry leaders. The Competition Collegiate teams are posed with a design problem and are asked to either create a new building design that satisfies the project requirements or redesign an existing floor plan. The mandatory performance target is the DOE Zero Energy Ready Home specification or the forthcoming Advanced Energy Design Guide For K-12 School Buildings–Achieving a Zero Energy Building. Each team spends 4 to 10 months designing a building to compete in one of five contests within the residential and commercial categories: • Residential: Suburban Single-Family Housing - Urban Single-Family Housing - Attached Housing - Small Multifamily Housing • Commercial: Elementary School. A total of 40 invited teams complete the project and attend the competition event, where they present their designs to a panel of expert jurors, compare their efforts to those of other teams, learn from presentations by thought leaders, and engage with a variety of organizations about energy careers. Competition Requirements Each team must be sponsored by a collegiate institution, be comprised of at least three students and a faculty advisor, and have a designated team lead. Student teams are encouraged to be multidisciplinary and have industry advisors, such as local home builders, to help inform their decision-making process. Details on the competition requirements will be published in the 2018 Student Design Competition Guide. Learn more at the Race to Zero competition requirements webpage. 4. Architectural heritage sites are an invaluable part of a country's cultural legacy. Conceptualized and created in a different epoch, sited in a different cultural context, they are memory markers of cultural history and give a sense of time to the place. In India, these sites spread across the country date back many millennia. Most of them - palaces and forts and tomb and pleasure gardens, religious places, historic cities, gateways, heritage streets, and traditional water harvesting structures - are now public spaces. The physical and cultural contexts of these historical structures, have completely changed, the character of open spaces around transformed. Largely due to the legislation of Central and State Archaeological Departments, these open areas are developed as gardens, parks or are left as fenced open land. Is it the only way to conserve and protect these areas, which at many times, become inert islands, disconnected with the life of the city? Can the area around Red Fort, at present developed as lawns, be conceptualized as a cultural venue for the nation’s Independence Day and for the rest of the year, as areas for activities like informal shopping, public rallies, discourses and Performing Arts? A fruit orchard may be a better idea!! Can the original entrance to Qutb Minar complex be revived from Alai Darwaza and integrated with the surrounding Archaeological Park? Can Shanivaar Vada be surrounded by religious structures, streets and developed as a recreational hub in the cultural capital of Maharashtra, or are formal gardens are better suited for its present day context? Many sensitive and relevant approaches and ideas can be envisioned for development of these open spaces so they become lively places with a special context and relate well to the contemporary needs and concerns of the region. The Competition is an attempt to encourage students to explore and visualize surrounding areas around monuments and heritage precincts with radical and fresh approaches so as to make them meaningful and relevant spaces along with the historical spirit in which they are sited, thus becoming part of the daily life of the city or a town or a village. Call for action: International competition in architecture 2017 - Jacques Rougerie Foundation Architects, engineers, designers, all of them participate to the development and the construction of an upcoming world at their own level. Together, by looking further, beyond preconceived ideas and well-established concepts, these entrepreneurs, these creators, have the power to make up new rules, propose new directions: innovative facilities and housing bringing new living conditions, making room for new ways of moving, of consuming energy, to counter major environmental challenges of our era and others to come. The prizes of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation support and accompany this approach. Innovation, architectural disruption, sustainable development and resilience against climate changes are the keywords of this 7th edition of the international competition in architecture of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation - Institut de France. Every architectural project submitted must fall within one of the two fields: the Sea, guardian of our environmental as well as societal environments, or Space, field of development and technological applications that are unavoidable for the future of our civilisation. This year, the Foundation adds to the grand prix - which are open themed - three more specific themes, the «focus», to deliver a new, prospective vision, targeting one issue in the medium term or preparing oneself for an ecological and social emergency on one continent. 7. Augmented reality provides us with new research field of architecture. Now you do not need architectural models. We can see the building as it is with all the details. At the same time, it remains virtual model. These properties are augmented reality give us new opportunities. For example, we can compare the buildings from different regions of the world, from different eras in the same scale. We can make collections of buildings, unimaginable compositions. These new aspects give the researcher of the architecture an unexpected tools and fundamentally unattainable points of perception. Perhaps we will be able to explore the flow of time in the evolutionary series of buildings from different eras. Traditional classical compositions of cities are broken, being subjected to the inexorable impact of a new instrument of perception. Augmented reality and virtual reality give us the opportunity to create a new philosophy of historical development of architecture. Explore it in every detail. In this competition, we invite participants to submit 3d models of buildings from your country and your region. We’ll create augmented reality applications based on the best models. Participants can create 3D models in 2 categories: • 3d model of a modern building with unique details inherent in your region. • 3d model of a historic building or monument which is not far from you. Building models should contain photorealistic textures and at the same time be geometrically optimized, do not contain interior details and various elements that are not visible from the outside. Optimum format of models: 3ds. Also files in format Sketchup 2015 are accepted. The prize fund is € 12,500. Register by: 11-29-2017 / Submit by: 11-30-2017 View the full article
  8. Home is a domain that is intimate to all of us. Beyond its everyday function as a physical shelter for people and their activities, it connects with its user on a personal and emotional level. The modern day scenario of environmental and financial concerns along with the desire to have more freedom has led people to follow simpler and efficient ways of living. With the rapid growth of technology and smart living there lies an opportunity for efficient spaces with the feeling of homeliness and personal touch points. The Tiny House Movement celebrates this concept of simple yet resourceful living. The homes can be designed as an innovation of maximum usable space in minimum footprint, thus redefining sustainability. Living small, yet Living it All. THE CHALLENGE The Design of the house should be innovative and creative with a sustainable edge. The relation between the exterior and interior spaces ought to be taken into consideration. The proposal should be well conceptualized. Most importantly, the area of the house should not exceed 250 sq.ft. Mobility being a vital factor, the house need not be self-mobile, but should be treated as an extension that can be towed easily by a car or pickup truck. However, the participants can avoid the issue of mobility altogether but provide a strong justification for the same. The Interior Program Spaces include: Living Area | Sleeping Area for 2 | Cooking and Dining Area Toilet | Workspace. Client Interaction is one of the critical components of the design proposal. For the purpose of this competition, entrants may assume an individual, couple, or a genre of people, based on the design concept. 10. For a second year the Costa del Sprawl ideas competition seeks creative solutions to improve the social, urban, and architectural situation in some of Costa del Sol’s sprawling neighbourhoods. This year’s competition is focused on the theme of ‘identity’ and invites participants to imagine a piece of architecture, whether building or space, which could be adopted as a model of contemporary vernacular architecture specific to the area of Riviera del Sol, and act as a precedent for the future planning and development of the neighbourhood. Andalucía contains an exciting variety of vernacular and contextual architecture which has grown throughout its tumultuous history and within its diverse landscapes. From the labyrinthine streets of medieval fishing towns and gleaming white walls of hillside villages, to palatial citadels and capitals of once mighty empires, the architecture of Andalucía tells a compelling story and creates a strong sense of place and identity. This sense of identity and reflection of context has all but vanished from contemporary architecture in Andalucía, and this is most notable in the sprawling neighbourhoods of the Costa del Sol which communicate little more than the capitalist speculation which lead to their existence. Nonetheless, this condition now forms a part of the area’s history and provides the point of departure for any future architectural, urban or planning projects. It is this point of departure which forms the basis of the ideas competition. Participants are asked to produce a design which communicates their idea of contemporary vernacular architecture for Riviera del Sol. Designs can be can be experimental or based on the tried and tested, but they must all look towards the future as well as take into consideration the social, cultural, topographic, climatic, urban and architectural context of Riviera del Sol in a holistic manner. More specifically, you are asked to design a building, a fragment of a building, or a space which could be used to influence and shape the future of architecture and planning in the neighbourhood of Riviera del Sol. The designs should be located on the piece of land between Calle Jose Rivero and Calle Severiano Ballesteros as identified on the map. It is up to you to decide how much or little of the site you use and the location of your design upon it. The scale and typology of the design is also free for you to decide as the focus of the competition is to imagine a new vernacular, although this should not be interpreted merely as a stylistic study; the way in which your design is inhabited, the atmosphere of the spaces, and the materials and manner in which it is constructed will all be taken into account in the judging process. Questions are welcome and should be sent to CostaDelSprawl@gmail.com. More background information on the Costa del Sprawl project can be found in the following document: https://issuu.com/sameadington/docs/cds_bedford_book_small Register by: 08-31-2017 / Submit by: 08-31-2017 View the full article

  17. The Open Call is open to professional architects, artists, designers and students of architecture schools of member states of the International Union of Architects (UIA). This Open Call is characterised, firstly, by a general interest in urban planning, involving issues of open towns, green spaces and generally issues that relate to the following pairs: town-nature, nature-humans. It is, in other words, related to the ascertainment that today the historical and traditional town centres exhibit a generally degraded image. A typical example of such an area is the Open Call’s study area, the Municipal Garden, located in the central core of the town of Pafos. With the obvious lack of maintenance, the Garden is now an abandoned area and, as such, a not so attractive green space in the urban fabric of the town, with little interest and few proposals for uses and activities by the visitors. Today, due to this image of abandonment, the weaknesses of the Municipal Garden and the living environment in general, it is essential to improve and utilise the Garden, as well as to redefine its role in relation to the whole town. With this as the main aim – the redefinition of the Garden’s relationship with the town and generally the redefinition of human coexistence with nature – we suggest the investigation, study and design of structures entitled “SECOND NATURE”, that can strengthen these relationships/pairs: town-nature, nature-humans, since the present state of the park prohibits this potential interaction and fosters an alienation that is due to the Garden’s definitive separation from the whole town. THE STRUCTURES The call of this Open Call, entitled “SECOND NATURE”, proposes the creation of 7 light, small scale structures that will be placed in the open space of the garden. The main objective of the Open Call is the promotion and upgrading of the garden, as well as its diffusion to the whole town and, most of all, the strengthening of human presence in this area. The main objective of the theme of this Open Call – “SECOND NATURE” – is to create structures that will act as receptors of nature, i.e. green cores-containers that will be the natural extension of the garden. These structures will act as urban points and forms in the garden areas, which will mainly carry in their construction planting and generally plants such as flowers, herbs and others, thus creating a new peripatetic experience in the garden area and, also, giving the opportunity to the town’s residents to come into contact with nature. At the same time, the structures will act as a background for numerous activities and events in the garden, providing new challenges and experiences to the visitors. Due to the particularities of the site, the structures will be based on a general intend of mild intervention in the park. Register by: 08-31-2016 / Submit by: 08-31-2016 View the full article
  18. Started in 2009, Warming Huts: An Art + Architecture Competition on Ice has been melding world-class design and art with Winnipeg’s famous winters. The competition has seen entries from across the globe and caught the attention of international architecture publications and awards, as well as admiration from newspapers such as the New York Times. Warming Huts is an open competition, endorsed by the Manitoba Association of Architects. Proposals for the competition are submitted online at www.warminghuts.com. Once entries are submitted, a blind jury selects designs that best “push the envelope of design, craft and art.” Nearing the end of January, competition winners travel to Winnipeg to begin construction on their warming hut. The weeklong building blitz gives designers a chance to watch their vision come to life while allowing the public to watch them at work. Warming huts are then brought out to the Red River Mutual Trail for visitors to skate to, interact with, and enjoy. Warming huts will remain out until the end of the skating season. This call for entries is open to all professional designers (or teams of designers) who have a proven portfolio of design work. Each design team must include an artist and a member of a recognized architectural association. Membership includes registered architects and intern members. The organizers encourage the formation of multi-disciplinary teams. Register by: 10-03-2016 / Submit by: 10-03-2016 View the full article

  22. Around 10,000 participants from 204 nations are expected to descend in Brazil, unleashing fierce competition and rivalries. It is going to be a make or break event for the city of Rio de Janeiro, which has got the privilege of being the first South American city ever to host the Olympics games. It is estimated that around half a million fans and supporters are expected to grace the event in Rio, making it hard for the city officials to control the proceedings. Olympics have always been a backdrop of raw emotions, intense rivalries, passion and sportsmanship between individuals. The games are a total fan fiesta, where supporters from all over the world converge together and celebrate the spirit and motto of the games. A number of supporters miss out on some of the marquee events due to multiple games at a time, limited tickets, sell outs or other reasons that tend to hamper their experience of the games. The aim of this competition is to design a 'SUSTAINABLE FANBOX', a new typological structure and mascot for the games that would be the prime interaction and gathering zone for the spectators during the Rio Olympics 2016. The competition seeks to recreate the atmosphere of a stadium in a freestanding and temporary structure where fans who miss out on the live experience could connect with the Olympic games virtually. The FAN-BOX should communicate a sustainable and profound architectural statement being able to attract and converge visitors around it for intense 24X7 experience of the Rio games. The site for the SUSTAINABLE FANBOX is the Copacabana beach in Rio De Janeiro. The competition encourages the participants' to envelop and integrate all the diverse functions into one distinct and innovative structure, for a 24x7 inclusive environment and enhanced experience of fans and spectators. The main focus of the FAN-BOX except its functional provisions should be to reflect on the true connection of sustainability and architecture. The FAN-BOX should seek to become a tool for critical thinking on the topic of sustainability as a holistic approach rather than just a substitute for architectural expression and cosmetic application. The project must engage with and challenge the public, to raise social consciousness on alternative approaches to environmental challenges, local as well as global, giving the fans, spectators and general public outside the realm of the Olympics a fresh perspective on the opportunities and interpretations of true sustainability. 23. This open ideas competition forms part of a wider research project and seeks designs which encourage and facilitate cultural exchange and integration between immigrant and native communities. Spain’s Costa del Sol has been permanently transformed by the construction boom of the late 20th and early 21st century and its abrupt end with the European financial crisis. Inward looking private residential complexes and commercial facilities sprawl incoherently to form communities inhabited predominantly by immigrants from Northern Europe. The financial crisis brought almost all construction to an abrupt halt. Abandoned structures remain on the periphery of the sprawl as if monuments to the boom and crash. The brief is simple. This competition asks individuals and teams to produce a single A3 page which communicates their idea for the repurposing of an abandoned structure at the edge of one of the Costa del Sol’s urbanisations. The concrete foundations of an incomplete residential building in Riviera del Sol embody the moment the crisis hit this part of Spain. Ideas are sought to demonstrate how such modern day ruins can be used and adapted in order to have a positive impact within their communities where the current urban design makes integration of cultures so difficult. The site The primary site for the ideas competition is the unfinished concrete structure highlighted on the map, however, designers are encouraged to think of ways in which new designs can engage the structure with the surrounding area and community. There is therefore no official boundary to the site, the only requirement is that the concrete structure is incorporated into any proposal. 25. The Hyperloop One Global Challenge is a competition which invites teams anywhere on Earth to put forward a comprehensive commercial, transport, economic, and policy case for their cities, regions, or countries to be considered to host the first hyperloop networks. The Hyperloop One Global Challenge is not an engineering competition: we bring the technology, you tell us how it should be used in your location. Advised by an international jury of leading experts in transport, technology, economics and innovation, Hyperloop One is seeking to collaborate with applicants who most powerfully make the case for how Hyperloop would not only transform passenger and cargo transport in their locations, but also how that Hyperloop transformation will drive economic growth, generate opportunities for development, and create radically new opportunities for people to live anywhere, work anywhere and be anywhere. Entries are encouraged from any kind of group with interest in a corridor. We positively encourage entries which bring together all the relevant parties with an interest in a corridor, including public sector authorities and private business, governments and investors, creative minds who plan infrastructure and the commercial partners who fund and deliver it. By participating in our Global Challenge, you’re securing access to Hyperloop One resources – experts, time, and tools – to develop your ideas. From the many submissions we receive, our diverse team of transportation experts will narrow the proposals down to 12 finalists. As a finalist, you will get additional access to our ecosystem, technology, coaching, guidance and a dedicated Hyperloop One point person to help you take your idea to the next level. Ultimately, three winners will be chosen by a panel of experts from around the world. Teams that demonstrate a real corridor opportunity, favorable economics, a favorable investment climate and the willpower to advance regulatory climate stand the best chance of winning. Winners will be able to tap further into our network, get full access to our technology and our ability to help raise capital in creative ways.
