  1. A city is constantly changing, and this is also the case for Sittard. For instance, the historic city centre once drew in large numbers of tourists, but the number of visitors these days has dropped considerably, and continues to fall. The number of vacant commercial premises is increasing, resulting in a negative impact on the look and feel of the centre. Another change is the intensification of the roads and the traffic using them. A main route through the centre (The Rijksweg) results in a division of the former shopping area. The high intensity of car traffic means the road acts as a barrier, despite the fact that there is a ring road around the centre. Current developments are not dealing with the vacant premises and the division of the centre. We are therefore looking for new and innovative concepts and further elaborations to tackle these issues.

  2. This competitition gives a new perspective and offers a new view beyond ourselves to show us that there are people who don’t have the basics or even vital such as a shelter, an accomodation which protects us from a rainy day, which can give shade when the sun burns and more confortable than a cardboard on the freezing floor. And that, dear contestants, is a real issue. Give an answer to this is definitely a great challenge.

  3. archasm invites architects, students, engineers, designers, artists and philosophers to send in their entries for our competition. Idea based competition, Single stage, Team of maximum three members, No professional qualification necessary for eligibility, Teams can be interdisciplinary.

Mumbai, or erstwhile Bombay is the largest metropolis of India and an answer to the likes of Shanghai, London or New York. It is the financial capital and trade epicentre of the country, a city of lifestyles and narratives. The 'Maximum City' of Bombay is renowned all over the globe for the enormity and surrealism of BOLLYWOOD, which is the nickname given to the Hindi language Film Industry located in the city. The industry has come a long way and bloomed since its inception, to a multi-billion dollar industry, only second in capacity to its American cousin, Hollywood. Bollywood is a goliath in terms of revenue generation and employment, both direct and indirect, supporting a multitude of auxiliary industries like tourism, music, design and fashion. Bollywood's film production centre is a government-owned studio facility known as 'Film City' in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. It is an integrated film studio complex with several recording rooms, gardens, lakes, theatres and grounds that serve as the venue of many Bollywood film shootings.

The aim of this competition is to design a 'Film City Tower' in Bombay and explore the possibility of a new vertical typology for a film city. The project resolves to put Bombay and Bollywood on the global map through a futuristic and contemporary landmark for the city. The participants are tasked with proposing a new holistic and integrated vision to inject a new sense of purpose in a Film City.

The competition encourages participants to conceive and imagine additional innovative programming and integrate the functions of a film city with other auxiliary functions to increase the commercial, social and ethical viability of such facilities. The setting up of film cities require an enormous footprint on land, which is a scarce and vital resource in the case of Bombay. The proposal for the land intensive function of a film city is to be compacted and transformed into a vertical tower that would generate an exemplary urban form. The functions of a film city need to be optimised into vertical units through nesting, layering, stacking or overlapping onto one another in a legible fashion. The proposal should strive to create an iconic landmark representing Bollywood and its significant contribution to the cultural landscape of the subcontinent for over a hundred years. It should be styled according to the suitability of this enormous industry and transform the skyline of Bombay. The design for the tower should explore the insertion of alternative energy methods, responsive and adaptive design techniques and self regulatory systems to strike an equilibrium between the input-output energy cycle. The proposal should insert a variety of public functions in the tower that would greet the public with a panorama view of the city. The proposal should innovate and distribute the aspect of social and community spaces equally in a tower, which in most of the cases, is absent as the building rises up.

The participants are asked to design a new island for the Film City tower in the 'Mahim Bay', across the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, in Mumbai. The site island is located at a distance of approximately 100 metres off the BWSL promenade in the Mahim Bay waters, adjoining the Western Express highway. It is bounded by the Bandra Reclamation area to its north and west, Mahim and Worli to the far east and south respectively.

  7. BABEL
Attention to all visionary artists, architects, engineers, 3D designers and model makers:  Wide Open Arts will host a curated booth of imaginary towers in our upcoming Outsider Art Fair | NYC (Jan 21-24 2016). Submissions are open to all.
All received designs that adhere to the dimensional and structural criteria will be evaluated and the best designs will be 3D printed and displayed in the curated space at the Outsider Art Fair NY 2016. The project and space will be curated by independent artist and curator, Leah Gordon.

We are in search of contemporary, modern and ancient towers; industrial or religious; fantastical or utilitarian; brutalist or gothic...from air traffic control towers to bell towers to tower blocks and sky scrapers.   Imaginary cities and surreal structures have long been the domain of many outsider artists. This exhibition aims to create a collective multi-authorial installation that has its roots in the Fluxus mail art movement. "Babel" is the 21st century mail art for the digital world. The final result will recall many renowned outsider environments such as Simon Rodia's Watts Towers, Nek Chand's Rock Garden and Le Facteur Cheval's Palais Idéal.

Selected artists will receive documentation of the final display, a digital image of their individual tower once it has been printed, along with visibility and acknowledgement on a dedicated page on the Outsider Art Fair website.

  8. What does it mean to build? Traditionally, building has been defined as the assembly of parts or materials toward the creation of a whole. While to build is often perceived as an Apollonian pursuit, to destroy appears to be its Dionysian counterpart. Understanding that our built environment is the product of many forces, it can dialectically be reduced to the tensions between creation and destruction, addition and subtraction, and erection and demolition. In a design culture focused on the superlative (the tallest, the newest, the priciest), in which destruction is often perceived of or produced by an act of violence, the processes of removal appear as secondary concerns or collateral damage. However, if we are to better understand the life cycles of our built environment, we must explore the possibilities and implications of Taking Buildings Down.

This competition of ideas is simultaneously a political act, a means of criticism, and a method of speculation. Taking Buildings Down asks proposals for the production of voids; the demolition of buildings, structures, and infrastructures; or the subtraction of objects and/or matter as a creative act. Removal is all that is allowed.

  9. INTRODUCTION
Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia with 12.2 million residents within the city and 16.8 within its urban area. It is a major political, economic, cultural, and scientific centre in Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the largest city in the entire European continent. Moscow is the northernmost and coldest mega-city and metropolis in the world. By its territorial expansion in 2012 southwest into the Moscow Oblast, the area of the capital more than doubled; from 1,091 square kilometres up to 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi), and gained an additional population of 233,000. Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, making it the world's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its unique architecture with various historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly coloured domes. The city of Moscow is considered the centre of Russian culture, having served as the home of prestigious Russian artists, scientists and sports figures during the course of its history and because of the presence of many different museums, academic and political institutions and theatres. It is also the seat of power of the Government of Russia with the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence of the Russian president.

The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are also one of the several World Heritage site in the city. A Circus is a company of performers that may include clowns, acrobats, trapeze acts, musicians, hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, unicyclist and other object manipulation and stunt-oriented artists. Animals were widely used in traditional circus but less so now. Contemporary circus combines traditional circus skills and theatrical techniques to convey a story or theme. Compared with the traditional circus, the contemporary genre of circus tends to focus more attention on the overall aesthetic impact, on character and story development, and on the use of lighting design, original music and costume design to convey thematic or narrative content. The Moscow State Circus company is widely applauded for its levels of originality and artistic skill

  10. We all are running at a reckless speed in our lives as a whole. From Low speed to 4G, from cart to supersonic jets, from a lifetime of learning principles to learn in 24 hours’ tips, the speed seems to be the only motto in our lives, whether right or wrong. Thus, understandably we spend a lot of time in travelling, especially with the city full of traffic and boring waits at signals.

The competition invites ideas from the young mind to create a traffic island for the perplexed and confused citizen which may offer the symbolic representation of the speed itself or aim to create a contrasting solemnity we all may actually need. Options are open to 2 (max) members’ UG or Diploma student teams from all schools of design to think. Only challenge is how create a traffic island of 9m dia on a four lane right angle x-ing, which will make one 'THINK'.

  11. Described by Elizabeth I as ‘the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England’, St Mary Redcliffe is both an ecclesiastical jewel and a dynamic, living church – a beacon of positivity, helping the least-advantaged and marginalised within the city of Bristol. The church is ambitious to expand its outreach and mission activities. It is also determined to increase people’s enjoyment of the building by creating an outstanding visitor experience. The church’s development project, the focus of this design competition, will run concurrently with a wider regeneration project, The Redcliffe Neighbourhood Development Plan, which seeks to place the church – Grade I listed and the architectural equivalent of many European cathedrals – at the heart of a new urban village within the city centre.

St Mary Redcliffe attracts tens of thousands of visitors and tourists annually. Built and then re-built over a 300-year period from the early 13th century to the 15th century, the church embodies magnificence, but has always lacked sufficient support spaces for its important work in one of the most deprived wards in the country. This is a two-stage design competition; at the first stage, expressions of interest are sought; at the second, designers will be asked to respond to the church’s vision for an integrated scheme, incorporating a range of facilities within a building or buildings: administrative and support spaces, exhibition spaces, a café, a shop, a meeting hall, an expanded/new community centre – all aimed at enabling the church to engage more fully with the local population and visitors, offering hospitality to all, sharing its history and treasures, as well as its grace and inspirations.

The competition seeks an outstanding architectural team that is creative, imaginative and visionary, who thoroughly understands the needs of the church and respects its exceptional heritage.

  13. Hybrid Realities is an interactive gallery exhibition opening in May 2016. The exhibition will highlight innovative design projects that rethink how our digital universe affects the design of physical spaces.

    CURATORIAL VISION
Hybrid Realities is an exhibition that explores how architecture can at once express new digital ideals and re-evaluate analog human sensations. The exhibition examines ways in which the digital revolution has changed our expectations of the spaces we inhabit, and poses new ideas about how design is humanized within this paradigm. Just as the automobile and jet plane changed our perception and expectations of space by collapsing the time-distance between places, the internet is also changing our perception and expectations of spatial interaction.

    SELECTION & DISPLAY
The exhibition will be comprised of up to ten projects which will be selected from submissions to this open call, as well as invited participants. The projects will be displayed through an immersive digital/physical environment in the main gallery the District Architecture Center, located in the heart of downtown Washington DC.

  15. Exploration of contextual, cultural, and life cycle flows offers a critical lens for visualizing new housing strategies for living in the future. Among the most acclaimed speculative housing awards, the annual d3 Housing Tomorrow international competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore, document, analyze, transform, and propose innovative approaches to residential urbanism, architecture, interiors, and designed objects.

The 2016 competition calls for transformative solutions that advance sustainable thought, building performance, and social interaction through study of intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. Special emphasis may be placed on housing concepts that investigate dialogues including engagement of internal/external socio-economic diversity, change/adaptability over time, public/private spatial connectivity, and permanence/impermanence of materials. d3 challenges participants to rethink strategies for investigating residential design from macro-to-micro scales ranging from urban—promoting broader physical interconnectivity; communal—exploiting an interaction of units with shared facilities; and internal—examining the interior particularity of the unit, individual, or family in housing design toward promoting identity, ownership, and intimacy. An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself. Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Housing Tomorrow competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with residential buildings. Accordingly, design submissions must be environmentally responsible while fostering inventive conceptual living solutions for today and tomorrow. Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of our residential future.

The d3 Housing Tomorrow competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner, from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of the interior realm. Although there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or residential building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context. 18. Is there such a thing as a perfect prison? Is it possible, even in theory, to satisfy needs as potentially contrasting as those of inmates, victims and society? Rather than avoiding prison design on moral grounds, Combo Competitions wants to encourage architects and designers to confront the issue, looking for fitting solutions to a problem that is yet to be solved. The goal of Prison Puzzle is to design an ideal prison, located in the desert of Arizona, United States.

The concept should address the different interests and requirements found in inmates, victims as well as society as a whole, and the design should illustrate how architecture can shape environments and influence behaviors. In addition to concept and design, participants are invited to more directly control how to communicate their proposals. The presentation board should be seen as a canvas to be used as desired, rather than having to conform to a given list of plans, sections and renderings.

  20. The University Of Detroit Mercy School Of Architecture is conducting a call for entries for the 22nd edition of Dichotomy.
The theme of Dichotomy 22 is Creep. Creep denotes stealth, slow contortment, an underlying feeling of unease. Creep is solid materials deforming, boundaries slinking toward each other, something inching slowly closer without notice. Creep causes us discomfort while simultaneously suggesting something darkly different, something not altogether bad, but frightening in its furtiveness. Dichotomy 22 aims to explore this dark underside of the urban, the lurking possibility of architecture, the slow inevitable crawl of progress.

Dichotomy, a student publisheda journal, strives to be a critical link between UDM students and the discourses on design, architecture, urbanism, and community development. Like the institution, Dichotomy focuses on social justice and critical thought concerning intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development both in and outside of Detroit. The aim of Dichotomy is to disseminate these relevant investigations conducted by students, faculty, and professionals.

  21. The Distant Symmetry /// Symmetrical objects are composed of a balance between equal, yet opposite parts. It is not difficult to perceive symmetry when the two corresponding halves are adjacent to one another, but what if they were separated by a great distance? How can the two parts maintain a symmetrical relationship even when they are physically disconnected? What mechanism might mirror changes in one half to the other? What function or program can benefit from a remotely intertwined relationship? How can symmetry be perceived and experienced when it is not in the same space? What happens when symmetry becomes distant? Participants should explore the concept of symmetry, rather than simply duplication of an object. /// Submission Details: Entries may be conceptual, technical, and/or artistic. All graphics and text must be contained within a 4 inch diameter circle with white beyond. A submission is a single 300dpi JPG. Templates are on the website. Send submissions to PINcompetition@gmail.com and include your name, city, state, and country in the e-mail. International entries are welcome.
